SHAPE (Sexual Health Advocacy and Peer Education)

Thursday, October 1st to Tuesday, December 1st, 2020 (ET)

Sexual Health Advocacy And Peer Education
SHAPE is a program of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England (PPSNE) in partnership with the Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University. The program teaches through an interactive and engaged comprehensive sexual health curriculum at local Providence high schools. SHAPE strives to create an environment in which high school students can engage in accurate, authentic, and honest conversations about sexuality and sexual health. Through SHAPE, Brown volunteers facilitate weekly one-hour lessons at the Met High School and 360 where students can learn about and discuss topics such as birth control, healthy relationships, consent, and more in an open setting. Volunteers dedicate around 2-3 hours a week to SHAPE, which consists of teaching and lesson planning for 8 weeks. Additionally, new members will complete a self-paced Sex Ed 101 Training facilitated by Planned Parenthood and all members will receive virtual training on best practices for teaching the SHAPE 1 curriculum online.
SHAPE 1 Overview

SHAPE 1 is an eight-week introductory course in sexual and reproductive health that covers topics including anatomy and physiology, contraception, STIs, and sexual health decision-making. All lessons actively promote student participation and communication in addition to a broader emphasis on healthy relationships.
