Transcending Through Education Foundation

About

Vision:
The Transcending Through Education Foundation (“TTEF” or the “Foundation”) is a non-profit organization that provides resources and support for currently and formerly incarcerated individuals in Rhode Island state prisons to obtain higher education. Approximately 95% of incarcerated individuals are released from prison, and about 60% of them eventually return to prison. Education has been shown to reduce recidivism. It also provides individuals a meaningful opportunity to lead better lives and to give back to their community. TTEF believes that individuals can transcend their current circumstances through the pursuit of education.

Mission:
Founded in 2012, TTEF connects incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people pursuing a higher education with targeted resources so that they successfully complete their studies. Through a powerful narrative of self-empowerment and giving back, the TTEF seeks to reverse the School-to-Prison Pipeline and establish a Prison-to-School Pipeline. TTEF’s three founders were all formerly incarcerated in Rhode Island and upon their release went on to pursue a higher education. Now they seek to provide currently incarcerated persons with the financial, motivational and other support to do the same.

TTEF provides the following support services:
• Partners with the Rhode Island Department of Corrections to sponsor Community College of Rhode Island courses in prison.
• Awards annual scholarships of up to $1,000 to those who have been accepted to post-secondary institutions.
• Conducts in-prison workshops about applying to college and for financial aid with a criminal record.
• Provides awardees with personal mentors who have traveled a similar path.
